Vivid orange petioles and narrow undulating leaves

This plant is defined by bright orange to orangeyellow petioles paired with long, narrow lanceshaped leaves. Blades are midgreen above and slightly lighter beneath, with gently wavy (undulating) margins and a semigloss, slightly textured surface. Small basal lobes or ears at the leaf base give each leaf a distinctive, linear silhouette rather than the wider heart shapes common in other philodendrons.

Juvenile plants hold smaller, paddlelike leaves; as the vine climbs and produces aerial roots the leaves lengthen and the orange stem colour intensifies. It benefits from vertical support a moss pole or stake encourages longer internodes and the mature elongated form, while unsupported plants remain more compact with shorter blades.

Philodendron Billietiae M is an established species (described by Croat in 1995) and is prized by collectors for the graphic contrast of orange petioles against narrow blades. In practice it prefers bright, indirect light and regular support; a clear limitation is that orange petiole colour and leaf length will diminish in low light. Like other philodendrons it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if chewed, so keep away from children and pets. Availability tends to be greater from specialist growers than from mainstream garden centres.

Best sited where it can climb against a tall pole or trellis in a bright room to show its architectural profile. Note that smaller retail plants show juvenile foliage and need time and support to develop the long, lanceolate leaves, whereas more mature, climbing specimens already display the extended blades and vivid petioles.
