Organic ‘Black Turtle’ bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) from the seed company Gaia, a heritage dry bean, vigorous and incredibly productive

The ‘Black Turtle’ bean is an heirloom variety dating back over 150 years , highly prized for its exceptional productivity , hardiness, and excellent cooking qualities. A semi-common plant requiring support, it can produce up to 36 pods per plant , each containing 6 to 9 seeds . The small, glossy black beans are ideal for soups, chili, stews, or warm salads. Disease -resistant, heat -tolerant, and very robust, it is a reliable variety for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Nefarious plants : Alliums, Beetroot

Spread/carry : Semi-standard, requires a stand
Plant height : 90 to 150 cm
Quantity per packet : 50 seeds
Certification : Certified organic by Ecocert Canada
Special features : A 150-year-old, semi-vining variety, very productive, disease and heat resistant, excellent dried bean

Leaf color : Medium green

Farming method

To encourage germination, soak the seeds for a maximum of 8 hours in lukewarm water (longer soaking will kill the seeds). Sow directly outdoors after the last frost , at a depth of 2.55 cm .
Space the plants 7 to 10 cm apart, with 30 cm between rows. Provide support (trellis, teepee, netting) due to its semi-climbing habit. Germination takes 8 to 10 days at 21 to 31C (optimum 26C). For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every 3 weeks .

Full sun exposure (level 3), moderate watering (level 2).

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the pods and seeds are fully mature and dry . Leave enough space and air around the plants to allow for optimal drying of the beans at the end of the season.
Store only dried beans , in an airtight container, away from light and moisture.

Usage ideas

In traditional chili , where they perfectly retain their shape
In thickening and nutritious soups
In stews or casseroles
In protein-rich bean salads
Black bean puree or spread

The ‘Black Turtle’ bean is a true classic: productive, robust, resistant, and delicious. A reliable heirloom variety for an abundant harvest of high-quality dried beans.
