Mimosa pudica

Originally from Central and South America, Mimosa pudica, also known as the “Sensitive Plant,” has captivated gardeners worldwide with its unique touch-sensitive leaves that quickly fold up when disturbed. This fascinating plant behaviour makes it a delightful addition to any plant collection. Mimosa pudica is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice gardeners and as an engaging gift.

How to care for your Mimosa pudica

Water: Mimosa pudica does not like to be overwatered. Ensure the soil is well-draining and allow it to dry out slightly between waterings. During winter, reduce watering to minimise the risk of root rot.

Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may reduce the responsiveness of the leaves.

Humidity: Mimosa pudica thrives in a moderate to high humidity environment. If your home is dry, consider using a humidity tray or a room humidifier to boost moisture levels.

Temperature: Ideal growing temperatures are between 18C to 24C. It can withstand cooler temperatures down to about 15C for short periods but is sensitive to cold drafts and frost.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet owners.

Mimosa pudica’s responsive movements offer a unique interactive experience, making it a fascinating plant to observe and care for.
