Iris Sapphire Beauty Dutch Iris

Iris Sapphire Beauty is a classic Dutch iris variety that brings elegance and charm to any garden. Known for its stunning, florist-quality flowers, this variety is a favorite among both gardeners and floral designers. When planted in the fall or early spring, these bulbs come to life in late spring, producing exquisite blooms with dark blue standards and paler blue falls, each highlighted by a striking yellow “flame.” Rising on stately stems that reach 18 to 20 inches tall, these beautiful flowers create a magical display above their grassy green leaves. The long-lasting blooms make excellent cut flowers for creating sophisticated floral arrangements.

Sapphire Beauty, an Iris x hollandica species commonly known as Dutch iris, is a bulbous perennial with a columnar, upright habit. This variety is particularly well-suited to USDA Zones 6-8, where it will naturalize over time. The bulbs multiply easily, ensuring that the plants return year after year, creating increasingly larger displays with each passing season. Sapphire Beauty is ideal for planting in large, sweeping drifts, where its vibrant blue flowers can make a significant impact.

For the best results, plant Sapphire Beauty iris bulbs 4 inches apart and 5 inches deep. To create broad sweeps of blue blooms, consider planting bulbs in large numbersapproximately 15 bulbs per square foot. Choose a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-draining soil. It’s important to keep the soil moist, especially during the growing season, but avoid letting it dry out completely in the summer months. If you’re growing these irises in Zone 5, add a 2-inch layer of mulch in the fall to protect the bulbs from harsh winter conditions. Once growth begins, fertilize the bulbs with a specialized fertilizer to support strong, healthy blooms.

With its elegant appearance, easy care, and ability to naturalize, Iris Sapphire Beauty is a versatile perennial. Create a stunning garden display or add a touch of sophistication to your home with fresh cut flowers with this Dutch iris delivers timeless beauty and reliable performance.
