Indian Grass

Plant Overview

Indian Grass is a stunning native ornamental grass that adds vertical interest and year-round beauty to any landscape. Its blue-green foliage transforms into brilliant copper-orange hues during fall, creating a spectacular display. The plant produces elegant, feathery seed heads that emerge in late summer, providing food for birds and creating movement in the garden.

Plant Care

Indian Grass is remarkably low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. Cut back the grass to about 6 inches above ground level in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Division is rarely necessary but can be performed every 3-4 years if desired. This grass is resistant to most pests and diseases, making it an excellent choice for naturalized areas.

Planting Instructions

Plant Indian Grass in spring or early fall for best results. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring it sits at the same level as it was in the container. Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and apply a light layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the crown. Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow for mature spread.

For optimal growth, plant in a location that receives full sun. While Indian Grass can tolerate partial shade, it may become floppy and produce fewer flower heads. This grass performs well in prairie gardens, meadows, and as a backdrop in perennial borders. It also provides excellent erosion control on slopes.
