Acer tschonoskii seeds grow into Tschonosk’s maple a graceful, small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to the temperate biome from the Kuril Islands south through Hokkaido, Honshu and the mountains of central and southern Japan. Named after Chonosuke Sugawa (known as Tschonoski), the Japanese plant collector who worked with the Russian botanist Maximowicz in the 1860s70s and whose collections of Japanese flora formed the basis for many Maximowicz species descriptions. This elegant maple develops sharply pointed, deeply lobed leaves with a finely serrated margin and produces good yellow and orange autumn colour on a compact, somewhat fastigiate to rounded tree. Family Sapindaceae.

Full sun to partial shade; moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils; prefers cooler conditions. A refined collector’s maple rarely seen in Western gardens.
